Las Vegas Weather in May: Essential Climate Guide

Introduction

May can be a really good month to visit Las Vegas depending on the year! Generally there are many 90F/32C+ days and even some 100F/38C+ days. Some years it’s mainly 80s and 90s which is pretty nice. If the heat doesn’t bother you too much, this may be your month. For me though, it’s getting a little toasty for my liking. Visitors start to get a taste of that famous Vegas heat. Rain is also quite rare with on average only one day a month. It is the 2nd driest month of year. In this post I will detail what to expect when you visit Las Vegas in May.

Be sure to see how I ranked this month for best month to visit at the end!

Temperatures

May is the 5th warmest of the year. Usually days that are considered hot by Vegas standards are few except near the end of the month. But if you’re not used these very warm temperatures you may want to pick another month. The mean high temperature for the month is a warm 89F/32C. Normal highs range from 83F/28C to start the month, to 94F/34C at the end. This is statistically the first month with a high of 100F/38C or better - and on average it occurs by May 24th. Nights warm rapidly, often not getting below 70F. Chilly days are rare in May but it has been know to stay in the 60s for highs on a few days. The warmer temperatures mean it’s time to start thinking about avoiding the hottest parts of the day and spending a little more time indoors or in the pool. Be extra cautious if you’re out hiking or golfing. Bring more water and keep all your sun protection at hand. Listen to your body if you start feeling ill and seek shade.

I find the best way to get a feel for the weather is by looking at what happened in a previous year. Here is the latest actual May temperatures (2023).

A lot of days over 90F/32C but no 100F/38C days in 2023. This is what I would call a very nice May for Las Vegas. Pool weather, but still comfortable during the day. And not that cold at night with mainly 60s and 70s, though early in the month there were some 50s.

Rainfall

Not much to talk about in May. Subtropical high pressure really starts to place its grip on the desert southwest. On average only one day has rain and it’s usually light. In fact, it has only rained one time in the last four years and that day had 0.01” - barely enough to measure. If it rains on you in May, don’t go to the casino because you have terrible luck!

Snow

I only mention snow here because of Mt. Charleston. While most of the snow has melted, there could still be patches. And it does occasionally still snow in the Spring Mountains. In fact, 10 inches fell in 1986 which would certainly catch visitors from Las Vegas off guard. But on average there is only one day of snow in the month and that is usually light.

What To Pack

  • Now it’s time to start thinking about keeping cool. Bring light weight, loose fitting clothing.

  • Some people still find some parts of May cool at night or early in the morning. So if you’re visiting in the early part of the month or just get cold easily, bring a long-sleeve or lightweight jacket.

  • Be sure to think about sun protection. Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen are essential in May - especially if you will be at the pool, hiking or golfing.

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Comfortable shoes are a must. Las Vegas involves a lot of walking, especially along the Strip. Comfortable shoes are essential to prevent getting tired and blisters.

  • Swimwear is necessary if you plan to take a dip.

Don’t Forget These Other Things:

    • A portable charger. I know from experience if you forget one it’s gonna cost you an exorbitant amount to replace it if you have to buy it on the Strip.

    • Remember to pack your necessary medications as well as personal care items like toiletries, hand sanitizer, and lip balm.

    • Don't forget to bring your ID, credit cards, travel insurance information, and any other essential documents you may need for your trip. Seems obvious but I’ve done it.

Sunrise/Sunset

Sunrise on May 1st starts at 5:47 AM. By the end of the month the sunrise is 5:25 AM. Sunset at the beginning of the month is 7:28 PM and by the end is 7:52 PM. There is about 14 hours of daylight each day. Remember, Las Vegas is in the Pacific Time Zone - same as Los Angeles.

Safety Tips

  1. Stay hydrated: It’s starting to get hot and he desert is very dry! Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, even if it’s a little cool. And remember alcohol adds to dehydration. Frozen alcoholic drinks can give you stomach cramps as well.

  2. Lightweight Clothing: During the daytime you’ll need lightweight and breathable clothing. Opt for materials like cotton or linen, which allow air circulation and help you stay cool. Bring a jacket or long-sleeve if you’ll be out at night, especially early in the month.

  3. Protect against sun exposure: The sun is intense in May in the desert. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to shield yourself from harmful UV rays, especially if you’re hiking or golfing.

  4. Know Your Limits: Las Vegas offers a wide range of distractions and people seem to forget walking outside from casino to casino can take its toll when it’s hot. Pace yourself, drink responsibly, and take advantage of air conditioning often.

Conclusion

The weather in May is pretty nice but beginning to test the definition of what is hot. To be sure, this is a great pool month, but the heat may sneak up on some people if you aren’t paying attention. If you’re going to do outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or golf, try to do it early in the day. Be prepared for the dry weather and sunshine by having lots of water on hand as well as sun protection.
